CAD Data Migration - Migrating Legacy CAD Data To Modern Platforms
Data migration is a complex process that involves the migration of data from one application to another. Cad data migration involves the migration of legacy Cad data to another contemporary Cad application.
As is with other migration projects, Cad data migration involves the conversion of data in order to make it compatible with the target application. The need for careful analysis of requirements in a Cad migration project is accentuated on account of the complexity of the source data and the processing requirements.
Modern Cad software applications have inbuilt support for exporting data to and importing data from other Cad applications. However, legacy Cad applications do not have the ability to export the Cad data in a form that is compatible with modern Cad applications. Hence, there is a need for Cad migration projects in such situations.
Cad data may be in a paper and not in a digital format. In such a case, the data has to be converted into a digital format. The Cad data in the legacy application may be in 2D format, whereas the target application may require the data in a 3D format. The number of issues involved in a Cad data migration project can be and usually are complex in nature. It is therefore necessary that a thorough migration plan that outlines the requirements of the target data is essential if a company that is undergoing a Cad migration project is to succeed in its endeavor. The migration plan should outline carious issues in the entire migration such as the risks involved, personnel required, nature of source data, structure of target data, means of testing and validating target data. A company that does not have experienced personnel for carrying out Cad migration work should ideally either consult migration specialists or outsource the work to an offshore or onshore firm that specializes in Cad data migration. This is especially true if the historical Cad data that needs to be converted and migrated is critical for the organization. The nature of the target data should be understood and the steps required in processing the source data to arrive at the target data should be clearly outlined and validated. A subset of the source data can be processed and then validated in the target application. This will help the migration team to understand the complexity and the nature of the stored data. In Cad data migration projects, there may be a need for modifying the data in the target application, even after migration has taken place. In spite of intensive planning and the best of resources and efforts, a Cad Data Migration project may come across unexpected pitfalls. However, in such cases the management and resolution of such pitfalls becomes easier because of the fact that a plan is in place.
